The first time I set foot in Singapore, I thought it was just a modern, clean, and slightly sterile city. But after 5 days of wandering, I realized it's a place with a wonderful blend of culture, cuisine, and lush green corners. Here are 5 destinations I truly found worth the time and money.
Quick Info
- Best time to visit: February-April (dry, less rain) or July-September (festivals, cheaper prices). Avoid November-January due to heavy rain.
- Recommended days: 4-5 days is enough to explore the main spots without rushing.
- Budget estimate: Around 100-150 SGD/day (budget meals + admission fees + transport). Accommodation can range from 40 SGD (hostel) to 150 SGD (3-star hotel).
- Getting around: MRT is king – fast, clean, cheap (average 1-3 SGD per trip). Get an EZ-Link card or Singapore Tourist Pass (unlimited rides for 1-3 days). Taxis/Grab are more expensive, only use for groups or late nights.
- Connectivity: Physical SIMs are a hassle; I used SimNha eSIM – bought online before the trip, installed in 5 minutes, had 4G/5G data right after landing. No need to hunt for SIM cards or change small change.
1. Gardens by the Bay – The Garden of the Future
This place truly overwhelmed me. The Supertree Grove towers high with thousands of plants and flowers, especially stunning when lit up at night. Cloud Forest is a massive dome with the world's tallest indoor waterfall – I spent nearly 2 hours just admiring the layers of vegetation. Flower Dome is vast and changes themes seasonally.
💡 Tip: Buy the Cloud Forest + Flower Dome combo online in advance (about 32 SGD) to skip the queue. Arrive around 4 PM, explore the indoor domes first, then head outside at sunset to see the Supertrees light up (7:45 PM and 8:45 PM have free Garden Rhapsody show).
⚠️ Note: The OCBC Skyway (bridge between Supertrees) costs an extra 14 SGD; if you're afraid of heights, it's not necessary – viewing from below is already beautiful.
2. Chinatown and Little India – Two Worlds in One City
Each area has its own soul. Chinatown features ancient temples like Thian Hock Keng, street markets selling souvenirs, and countless delicious eateries. My favorite was Hainanese Chicken Rice at Maxwell Food Centre (only 5 SGD) – tender chicken, fragrant rice. Little India is more colorful, with the scent of flowers, spices, and gold shops. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is a must-visit photo spot.
💡 Tip: Walking is best, as the two areas are just 2 MRT stops apart. Go early morning (8-10 AM) to avoid crowds and heat. In Little India, try Roti Prata (1.5 SGD) and Teh Tarik (1.2 SGD) at Mr. Prata.
3. Marina Bay Sands – More Than Just a Hotel
Even if you're not staying at the hotel, you can experience the view from the SkyPark Observation Deck (26 SGD). Enjoy a panoramic view of the bay, the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum, and Sentosa Island in the distance. At night, the area sparkles with the Spectra Light & Water Show (free, 8 PM and 9 PM). I loved sitting on a bench near the Helix Bridge, eating ice cream while watching the show.
⚠️ Note: To enter the casino (inside the hotel), you must be over 21 and bring your passport. For the SkyPark, book at least one day in advance, especially on weekends when it's very crowded.
4. Sentosa Island – Artificial Beach and Fun Activities
Sentosa is an entertainment island with the clean Siloso Beach, Universal Studios Singapore (80 SGD per day ticket), and many activities like snorkeling and the cable car. I'm not a theme park fan, but walking along the coast and eating seafood at Coastes (about 25 SGD per dish) was relaxing enough. If you're adventurous, try MegaZip (39 SGD) – zipline from 75 meters high.
💡 Tip: Take the monorail from VivoCity (4 SGD) or walk across the pedestrian bridge from the mall (free). Avoid weekends as it's packed. Bring sunscreen and water because items on the island cost twice as much.
5. Kampong Glam and Haji Lane – Historic and Hipster
This is the Muslim quarter with the Sultan Mosque (free entry, dress modestly). Haji Lane is a tiny but colorful street with vintage fashion stores, cafes, and graffiti. I spent an entire morning just taking photos and drinking egg coffee (Egg Coffee) at a small shop on the street – rich and creamy, very unique.
💡 Tip: Go in the morning (9-11 AM) when it's cool and less crowded. Nearby Arab Street has many delicious Halal eateries – try nasi padang (about 8 SGD) or murtabak (6 SGD).
Final Thoughts
Singapore isn't a cheap destination, but every dollar spent is worth the experience. I especially love its cleanliness, safety, and ease of getting around. And to make the trip complete, I always use SimNha eSIM – just scan the QR code before the flight, and you have internet as soon as you land. No worries about losing signal, no wasting time buying SIM cards. Have a great trip!
