Introduction
I remember my first time setting foot in Beijing in July—it was so scorching hot that I just wanted to lie down in the hotel. The scenery was beautiful, but the 40°C heat made me not want to look at anything. Since then, I've learned that choosing the right time is crucial for a perfect trip.
Quick Facts
- Best time: April-May (spring) and September-October (autumn)
- Suggested duration: 7-10 days for 2-3 cities
- Budget reference: 800-2000 RMB/day (including food, accommodation, and domestic transport)
- Transport: High-speed train (fast, punctual), metro in cities (cheap, easy with Alipay)
- Connectivity: Use SimNha eSIM – I've tried it, stable throughout the trip, no need for physical SIM swap.
Spring (March-May): Blooming Flowers and Pleasant Weather
April-May: Ideal
This is my favorite time. Temperatures range from 15-25°C, skies are clear. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom in Wuhan, Xi'an, and especially the Forbidden City – a stunning sight. Tourist numbers aren't too high yet, and flight and hotel prices are reasonable.
💡 Tip: Book Beijing-Shanghai train tickets 2 weeks in advance, as they sell out quickly this season.
March: Still Chilly
If you go in March, bring warm clothes as temperatures can drop to 5°C in the north. However, you'll avoid the crowds and have a chance to see melting snow in Tibet.
Summer (June-August): Hot and Stormy
July-August: Peak Season
Summer in China is very hot, especially cities like Chongqing, Wuhan, and Nanjing – sweltering heat. Storms are frequent, especially in the south, and can cause flooding. Still, this is an ideal time to visit Tibet (cool) or beaches like Sanya.
⚠️ Note: Avoid Beijing and Shanghai in July-August due to heat and crowds. If you must go, drink plenty of water and bring an umbrella.
June: Rainy Season
Heavy rain in the south, but the north is still okay. This is low season, with low prices but possibly reduced service quality.
Autumn (September-November): Golden and Cool
September-October: Prime Time
Autumn is when I most want to return. Temperatures 15-25°C, mild sunshine, dry air. Golden leaves at the Forbidden City, the Imperial Palace, and West Lake (Hangzhou) create a poetic scene. October has Golden Week (Oct 1-7) – crowded and expensive, so avoid if possible.
💡 Tip: Go in late September or early November to avoid Golden Week crowds while still enjoying great weather.
November: Late Autumn
Temperatures start to get cold, but it's still pleasant in the south. Good for those wanting to photograph red leaves at Jiuzhaigou.
Winter (December-February): Cold but Fewer People
January-February: Bitter Cold
Temperatures can drop to -20°C in Harbin, but you get to see the stunning Ice and Snow Festival. Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai are also very cold, but fewer tourists. This is a good time to save money.
⚠️ Note: Wear non-slip shoes and layer up. In the south (Guangzhou, Shenzhen), it's still warm, around 15°C.
December: Christmas Atmosphere
Major cities are beautifully decorated, but it's very cold. If you like festive vibes, this is an interesting time.
Conclusion
After many trips, I find spring and autumn the best. However, if you snag cheap winter tickets or want to experience the ice festival, don't hesitate. The key is thorough preparation. And don't forget to buy a SimNha eSIM before your trip – I've used it, seamless connection from Beijing to Shanghai, no signal loss when checking maps or hailing rides.
